Interview Preparation

First Impressions

Grooming and etiquette are very important. Always Follow these simple guidelines:

  • Try to arrive at least 10 minutes early.
  • Smile and make eye contact.
  • Unless a different dress code is arranged before the interview, wear a conservative dark business suit and white shirt.
  • Trim your nails and hair nicely.
  • Turn off your mobile phone.
  • Shake the interviewers hand with a firm grip.
  • Do not smoke before or during the interview even if you are offered.

Making the Right Impression

Passion and motivation are important and these can be demonstrated by using the techniques above. However, passion and motivation are not all that is needed. You also need:

  • Leadership: If you supervise staff now, tell them about your management style and explain your strengths.  If you are staff-level discuss how your character, knowledge and work ethic would make you a dependable and strong leader.
  • Teamwork: Speak highly of your former company and your team. They need to know you work well with others.
  • Confidence: Confidence and honesty are directly related. Share your past accomplishments and past achievements, let them know you take an honest pride in your work.
  • Energy: Keep eye contact, smile, listen actively and respond positively to their explanations and questions.

Some Questions to Expect

While every interview is different, there are some standard questions that will likely be asked:

What are your strong and weak points?

Make the answer short and clearly to the point. Remember that every positive has a negative and explain both the negative and positive aspects of your weak point.

Why do you wish to leave your company?  Why are you interested in our company?  Why are you interested in this position?

Do not talk badly about your company.  Let them know that you enjoyed your past career experiences but their position is the position you have been waiting for.

What do you think is this company's biggest challenge for the future?

Studying the company, the market and the competition will help you prepare for this question.

What type of environment do you excel in?  Do you work well under pressure?  Are you a team player?

Some interviewers will ask you to tell them about a pressure situation when you achieved a goal. Others will use "negative interviewing".  You may be put in a difficult situation to see how you would react in common stressful work situation.

What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?

Show a desire to succeed and grow by contributing to the company in the current role first.  Be sure to emphasize that you want to build your career with the company you are applying with especially if you have many recent job changes.

When can you start?

30 days after signing an offer letter is standard. The interview process is long and most companies expect a start date of thirty days after reaching an agreement.

What is your salary expectation?

Tell them you want a competitive salary and be sure to discuss your expectations clearly with TMC before the interview.

Do you have any questions?

Asking about the long term vision for the role you are interviewing for, the direction of the company and company culture is a good idea. Examples of unacceptable questions include questions relating to benefits, vacation or any other questions not pertaining to the role or the company.

Ask for the Job!

If you think you would accept a position given the right offer then do not leave the interview without telling the interviewer. This is simple but effective.
A direct statement to confirm your interests proves that you are proactive, decisive, and interested. You don’t have to accept an offer in an interview, but you do need to let them know you are interested.

Finally

Remember that you are interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you.  Be respectful but ask questions about their business that will help you make your best decision.
